What is Aqiqa Sacrifice?

Meaning of Aqiqa in Islam:

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

"Every child is held hostage because of his Aqiqah. An animal is sacrificed for him on the seventh day, his head is shaved and a name is given."

Characteristics of an aqiqa offering

  • For a boy, two sheep or goats are slaughtered.
  • For a girl, one sheep or goat is enough.
  • It is not an obligation (fard), but highly recommended(Sunnah muakkadah).
  • The meat may be eaten by the family itself, shared with family and donated to the poor.
  • At slaughter, the child is often called by name, with a supplication (du'a).
