Qurban 2025
What does a wajib qurban entail?

During the Feast of Sacrifice, it is a religious duty for Muslims with sufficient financial means to slaughter a sacrificial animal. This form of sacrifice is also called the obligatory Qurban. It is important not to confuse this with a voluntary Qurban, which is performed from personal devotion but is not obligatory.

The Qurban is a form of worship that is religiously obligatory for Muslims who are considered prosperous. Therefore, sacrificing an animal during the Feast of Sacrifice (Eid al-Adha) is a mandatory act for this group. This sacrifice may only be made during the Feast of Sacrifice. Sacrificial animals slaughtered outside this period fall under voluntary Qurban and thus are not obligatory.

Allah teaches us through worship how important it is to be there for one another - to share, support and live together in communion. The Feast of Sacrifice is a great example of this. For Muslims who can bear it financially, sacrificing an animal during this feast is not a choice, but a religious obligation.

If someone who does have an obligation to bring a Qurban does not do so, then:

  • Did he not fulfill his religious responsibility,

  • Did he miss the opportunity to share with those in need,

  • And thus also failed to fulfill Allah's command.

So it is important to take this duty seriously. And if you have unexpectedly forgotten or neglected it, it is valuable to ask Allah for forgiveness and instead of the sacrifice, give a monetary contribution to people in need. This is how you still show commitment and stay true to the core of what Qurban really means: giving, sharing and looking out for each other.

In 2025, we will continue our Qurban campaign and make sure your donation goes to the right place. Through Sunrise Foundation, you can make your offering as sadaqa, adak, aqiqah, shifa or shukr - all year long. With your support, we bring not only food, but also hope.
